Myanmar's ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who spent much of the 1990s and 2000s under house arrest, has been sentenced to 2 years in jail. She was found guilty of incitement against the military and breaching Covid-19 rules during elections last year. A partial pardon by the military halved the original 4-year sentence.

Deposed by the armed forces in a February 1 coup, it’s the first conviction the 76-year-old faces in a series of trials that include corruption and electoral fraud charges. . Once seen as a torch-bearer for human rights, the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize winner’s reputation has been tarnished in recent years for her response to the Rohingya refugee crisis.
