Extreme heat adds to Canada’s excess mortality rate

The summer of 2021 brought with it an extreme heat wave that led to numerous calls to 911 and, according to Statistics Canada, more than 3,500 deaths over the span of two weeks in British Columbia and Alberta.
That heat dome contributed to a nearly six per cent jump in the country’s mortality rate. While heat-related deaths can be difficult to track as it can make pre-existing conditions worse, it still has some medical professionals worried about what this summer could bring.
And as Jamie Mauracher reports, experts say heat is the unexpected cause of mortality that we can’t ignore.
